Serious Margs

For your Cinco de Mayo Celebrations.

Let’s start by dispelling the idea that Cinco de Mayo is the major Mexican Holiday commemorating their independence from Spain. It is not. Cinco de Mayo is a minor Mexican holiday celebrating the Mexican army’s victory over the French at the Battle of Puebla in 1862.  However, it has become an immensely popular day in the United States. Be sure, there is nothing in the celebration that calls for people to drink oceans of bush league, syrup-driven Margaritas. We will see grocery stores and liquor stores full of easy-to-make mixes over the week. Please steer clear of this sewage. Take some time and treat yourself to a delicious, handmade cocktail! It is so worth it!

This year Gastro is here to give you two rockin Marg recipes that will blow the doors off anything else you have had up to this point. The newly opened Viktor & Spoils Taqueria is shepherded by the incomparable Steve Olson. He is recognized as one of the world’s foremost beverage experts, and his real passion is tequila and mescal. This recipe will humble you.
Smoky Daisy
1 1⁄2 oz Siete Leguas Blanco Tequila
1⁄2 oz Grand Marnier
1 oz Fresh lime
1⁄2 oz Agave Nectar
1⁄4 oz Del Maguey Vida Mezcal
Glass: Rocks (can be served up in coupe)
Garnish: Lime wheel
Preparation
Pour Agave nectar, lime juice, Tequila, Mezcal and Grand Marnier and into a mixing glass. Add ice to the mixing glass. Shake vigorously in the Boston shaker. Strain into a pre-chilled coupe glass, or over ice in a rocks glass. Garnish with a lime wheel.

The second recipe comes from one of America’s fastest rising mixologists Steve Carrow from Naha in Chicago. Steve is the humble sage that tends bar in a fine dining establishment. Over the years he has entered his hand drawn recipes into a note book. This journal has now been published into a gorgeous leather bound book named The Potation Handbook. This is the perfect gift for Father’s Day and is available at Amazon.
The recipe is a bit more simple than Olson’s, but is beautifully balanced and elegant.
Vaya con Dios!
2 oz Tequila
1/2 oz Combier (or any good Triple Sec)
1/2 oz Agave Nextar
Juice from 1/2 fresh lime (yummy)
